“Ukraine Claims it Thwarted Russian Attempt to Breach Border”

Ukraine says it has repelled a Russian armored offensive northeast of Kharkiv after Moscow’s forces launched an offensive across the border and tried to break through defense lines.

Kharkiv regional chief Oleh Syniehubov said that Russian intelligence groups are trying to penetrate the border, adding that “not a single meter has been lost.”

The local chief of Vovchansk said that the city has been under heavy attack since Friday morning and civilians are being evacuated.

Russian forces are said to be preparing a summer invasion of Ukraine in the coming weeks and may even try to capture the regional capital Kharkiv. But Ukrainian soldiers are convinced that Russia does not have the means to do so.

Russia’s border measures were predictable, said Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Anti-Disinformation Center.

Russia had the means to worsen the situation in the border areas, but not the ability to capture Ukraine’s second city, he said.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said Russian airstrikes hit Vovchansk with “guided aerial bombs” backed by artillery.

“Around 05:00, the enemy tried to break through our defense line under the cover of armored vehicles. So far these attacks have been repelled, the fighting continues with varying intensity,” the ministry announced..
