Harris agrees to debate future Trump vice presidential pick

Vice President Kamala Harris has agreed to discuss Donald Trump’s future candidacy, a Biden campaign official told CNN on Thursday.

The Biden campaign told CBS News that it has accepted the network’s invitation to participate in the vice presidential debate in studio on two dates, July 23 or Aug. 13, a campaign official said.

“We look forward to the Trump campaign agreeing to one of these dates so we can set the debate calendar for this entire campaign,” the official added.

The proposed date of July 23 comes less than a week after the conclusion of the Republican convention in Milwaukee, giving the Trump candidate limited time to prepare for a debate with Harris.

CNN has reached out to the Trump campaign to see if it will agree to get its candidate involved. In an interview that aired Thursday, the former president said there’s a “pretty good chance” he’ll announce his vice presidential pick at the Milwaukee convention.

The president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., who endorsed his father’s candidacy for Ohio Sen. JD Vance, told the senator on Thursday that “we should have an election sooner rather than later because I wanted it to be there now.” Trump Jr. spoke on his “Triggered” podcast. Vance indicated that if the former president called him, he would take the job.

“I want to help your father as much as I can,” Sen. Trump Jr. said. “Of course, if he asks me, I want to help him.”

On Wednesday, President Joe Biden and Trump accepted CNN’s invitation to the June 27 debate, a historically early showdown that will set the tone for the final months of the 2024 campaign. They also agreed to an ABC News debate on September 10.

Informal discussions between the Biden and Trump campaigns about the debates have taken place in recent weeks, focusing mostly on mutual disdain for the Commission on Presidential Debates and possible scenarios for bypassing the commission, three sources familiar with the discussions told CNN.

For millions of Americans, starting with the 2020 primary debates, the debates will be the most comprehensive scrutiny they can offer the candidates and their running mate.

Harris has become a key figure in the Biden administration and campaign this year, criss-crossing the country to note that the president — an older white man — may have a harder time reinventing himself.

Her efforts included serving as the administration’s abortion rights leader, getting the first president or vice president to visit an abortion provider, and traveling to states like Florida and Arizona where new court rulings and laws have called into question the future of abortion there..
