Body of a 23-year-old hiker missing since Sunday found at Rocky Mountain National Park

The body of a 23-year-old hiker who went missing during Sunday’s storms has been found in Rocky Mountain National Park, officials said in a news release.

Lucas Macaji’s body was found on Mills Glacier near the base of Lamb’s Slide, and preliminary investigations indicate he fell significantly, park officials said Thursday.

Macaj attempted to summit Longs Peak on Sunday and was reported late Sunday.

He was last heard from around 1 p.m. “When he texted a friend that he was at the top of Longs Peak,” the release said.

According to the park, major storms moved through the high elevations that afternoon.

According to CNN Weather, it snowed heavily late Sunday night. The weather station at nearby Granby-Grand County Airport recorded gusts up to 30 mph at lower elevations.

Macaj’s vehicle was found on the road leading to Longs Peak on Monday. Park officials said Tuesday’s search was hampered by high winds, blackouts and poor visibility.

Macaj was in the Marine Corps and most recently served in the US Space Force in Colorado Springs, CNN affiliate KUSA reported.

His girlfriend, Natalie Dodgen, told KUSA that he is in very good shape and has a lot of experience hiking in extreme terrain.

Macaji’s body was flown to a Rocky Mountain National Park landing zone before being transported to the Boulder County Coroner’s Office, where a cause of death will be determined, the park service said..
